WP6: ACE usage and Application Modules

In a change to the original project structure, a revised WP6 : ACE Usage and Application Modules, has been established in order to more tightly integrate research and development dealing with the usage of ACEs and their integration into the research prototypes. WP6 brings together those core tasks that have started in the first 12 months of the project to deal with the user modelling, learning and inferencing, intelligent handling of user queries and searching, and reasoning to assist in automating some of the personal content ownership policies.

Objectives

The objective of the new WP6 is to research and develop tools to determine how the different aceMedia functionalities can be used in combination by the intelligence layer of the ACE to create showcase application demonstrations for user evaluation. The result of the research is to take the project a step closer to reaching the vision of Autonomous Content Entities. To achieve this objective, WP6 will design and develop a first prototype of a general application that demonstrates the potential power of an ACE’s intelligence layer.

The intelligence layer’s capabilities are partly dependent on the semantic metadata that is available from WP4, and the personal metadata created in WP6. Creation of the intelligence layer includes specific rules and methods that can be applied to all the layers of the ACE. These are a class of self-governing rules which support the property of autonomy within the ACE. This enables the ACE to demonstrate various qualities of content management e.g. adaptability, scalability and robustness etc. Some of these qualities will be demonstrated by a new application showcase called self-organising content.

WP6 tasks include developments in personalisation, to include more explicit secondary context-aware models to support both personal and commercial content applications. The matching and the intelligent search and retrieval tasks of a user based on textual and visual queries are also part of WP6.

Database indexing, in order to closely couple the database development with the search and retrieval application development which depends on it, and ACE database components for the home environment are also integrated into WP6.
