WP3: Content engineering to support adaptability

The aceMedia value chain requires content which has been engineered to produce self-adaptable information rich media able to accommodate adaptation according to different contexts such as user preferences, network bandwidths, device capabilities and environmental conditions.

Objectives

WP3 aims to provide adaptability functionalities with the specific objectives of:

Innovation

The content adaptability according to contexts is at the heart of the ACE concept at the creation stage. This aspect embraces three different areas of work: fully scalable coding, scalable metadata and middleware solutions supporting enhanced portability across networks and platforms. These three tasks lead to fully scalable media and metadata codecs that enable real-time adaptation of content according to the available bandwidth, resources and requirements at the user end. With this technology, the content provider can encode the initial media content to a single bit stream and then the sub-streams according to the user requirements and the available resources can be extracted from this initial bit stream, thus avoiding transcoding, i.e. avoiding decoding the original stream and encoding again at lower bit rates, temporal and spatial resolutions.

To support file transfer and streaming of scalable content, WP3 also works on evaluation and development of content delivery tools for scalable media and metadata in ACEs.

Workplan

WP3 is led by Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) and includes Motorola Ltd. and Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (UAM). A total of four tasks will be carried out in this workpackage: scalable media coding, metadata coding, cross media adaptation to support portability and content delivery tools for scalable content. Work related to the first three tasks will be conducted over the whole project life but having higher resources allocation for the first two years, in which the bulk of R&D activities will take place.
