The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (FhG) is a link between science and industry, i.e. between research and the application of its results. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology with its three departments "cooperation systems", "life science informatics", and "information in context" is dedicated to enhance human abilities through flexible, context-adaptive information and cooperation systems. The group "information in context–ICON" is an interdisciplinary team of scientists that has gained an internationally acknowledged reputation in the areas of context-awareness, adaptive and personalized systems, mobile services, and usability engineering. ICON has been involved in several EU projects, e.g. HIPS, WINDS, RAFT, LISTEN, CRUMPET, Etracking, and SEWASI.
From ICON's background work and experience the following are strongly related to expertise needed in aceMedia:
Nomadic information systems: Embedding information for mobile devices; situation-aware information and interaction; dynamic user profiles; identification of personal preferences and physical environment conditions. This includes expertise in developing multi-agent-systems, intelligent learning algorithms, and semantic-based retrieval. Prof. Dr. Reinhard Oppermann leads this research area, with about 7 researchers permanently working in this group.
User-oriented software engineering: Requirements engineering; user-oriented design methods; participative system design; scenario-based design; conceptual modelling; adaptability of software tools and software engineering environments; adaptivity of user interfaces and context modelling; user validation, both in our usability lab and in field studies. Prof. Dr. Volker Wulf leads this research area, with about 5 researchers permanently working in this group.
