The Centre for Digital Video Processing at Dublin City University is an inter-disciplinary University Designated Research Centre which performs basic and applied research into the technologies necessary to support efficient management of large collections of multimedia information, specifically repositories of digital video information. The speciality of the CDVP/DCU has been audio-visual analysis for advanced feature extraction which in turn supports content manipulation. This specific niche area has been targeted because the expertise of researchers in the CDVP covers A/V analysis on the one hand, and information management on the other, and when these areas are combined it allows us to concentrate on video analysis, for the purpose of video content management. The CDVP also conducts research into browsing and search interfaces, video access from mobile platforms, and design of low-powered mobile devices for video processing.

The CDVP, which has 25 Faculty, post-doctoral researchers and graduate students, showcases its research in the Fischlar system, which is used on the University campus by over 2,000 people and provides content-access to several hundred hours of video content. Members of the CDVP have worked on a number of EU framework projects in this area as well as assuming the roles of National representatives to ISO MPEG and are leading participants in the US NIST-funded TRECVID annual video IR benchmarking activities.
